A courtyard is an argument for the middle of things.
In Kashti, on half an acre of open Ahilyanagar land, this 5,000-square-foot house turns its back on the road and opens instead to a garden held within its own arms. Cream lime-plaster walls, terracotta-tiled hip roofs and a low colonnade wrap three sides of a planted court, where the family gathers and a dog stretches out on the lawn. The house looks outward only through the courtyard — and is calmer for it.
The language is unhurried and Mediterranean, softened by the subcontinent. Hipped clay roofs and a raised tower catch the last of the sun; carved timber doors and metal jali screens filter the light into lace. At dusk, those perforated screens glow from within, turning the elevation into a lantern of pattern and warmth.
Detail is where the house earns its keep. Intricate jali fills every opening — at once shade, security and ornament, a contemporary reading of a very old idea. Stone-paved steps rise between planted beds lit low from the ground; terracotta urns, olive and cypress, bougainvillea against plaster. Nothing is loud; everything is warm.
Plan follows the sun and the seasons. Rooms open onto the shaded verandah and the court, so cross-ventilation and soft light do work that machines otherwise would. The colonnade offers a cool, in-between place to sit through the hottest hours; the upper tower lifts a room into the breeze.
The material palette is honest and local — lime plaster, clay tile, stone underfoot, timber and wrought metal. These are surfaces that age gracefully in the Deccan climate, gathering character rather than losing it.
At 5,000 square feet, the Courtyard House is generous without being grand. It offers what a courtyard has always offered — shade, green, and the quiet company of a house gathered around a single, shared centre.
